Fried Cornbread – Southern Cornmeal Hoecakes


  1. One cup of homemade flour
  2. One cup of ordinary cornmeal
  3. Two teaspoons of baking powder
  4. Half teaspoon of salt
  5. One tablespoon of sugar (not compulsory)
  6. Two eggs
  7. Three-fourth cup of buttermilk
  8. One-third cup of water
  9. Quarter cup of oil
  10. One tablespoon of fat, mixed with butter\


Take a baking sheet with tissue paper, put a rack on it, and keep aside. Mix flour with cornmeal, salt + sugar along with baking powder. Mix water and oil with buttermilk and mix well, now add eggs and continue mixing. Now put dry ingredients in it. Heat oil and butter together in a pan and put around one-eight cup batter and make medallions and continue frying until brown, then strain. Serve hot with syrup.
